Untap Your Inner-creative With Trinity Pr!

We love putting together creative mailers to help build awareness and loyalty for brands leading to editorial “namechecks” and positive reviews. Here’s our 3 x top tips on this winning PR tactic:
1. Timing & Targets
Even in a world of immediate news, journalists are still planning ahead for topical features – and of course, some titles still work to longer-lead deadlines. Planning ahead also means that all the elements of a campaign can be developed alongside the client and executed perfectly! We’d recommend brainstorming ideas and commissioning or sourcing packaging and gifts at least two months ahead of time.
Every campaign is different – but in our experience, it works well to send out a mailer just before a seasonal transition – so right now would be the perfect time to send out a cute product mailer on Autumn / Winter wellness.
While investing in a high-quality mailer doesn’t necessarily need to “break the budget”, it’s still an investment that you want to see returned, where possible! So, do think about what your budget range is per mailer and what this will “buy” you in terms of packaging and gifting. Like so much in PR, it’s often the behind-the-scenes work that pays dividends. So, nurturing journalist contacts ahead of and following a mailer, increases the chances of it being well-targeted & well-received with an abundance of opportunities to share on socials or within forthcoming features.
2. Trends
Connecting your product to a timely news or well-being trend is a must for a successful campaign. Explore socials and media for ideas on creative trends to help curate the perfect product sampling mailer – think colour, pattern, style, texture and sensory details. You can take inspiration from wellbeing news, cultural events, TV, film & music, social media trends or vintage campaigns – and whilst you don’t want to copy an idea, you can definitely “tap into” the current trends and popular “look books”. Media are often searching for products that fall into certain themes or colours for a page – so playing on brand pantone can work well with both packaging and a gift (if including). One of our all-time favourites at Trinity PR was the “yellow” mailer for Zest Active – with the product sample nestled in a lemon-coloured Glossier sports tote!
Ensuring that the mailer packaging fits in with the brand aesthetic and reflects current trends is important – but it also pays to keep sustainability in mind. You want any gift to reflect the theme, sit well alongside the product, but also be a genuinely useful (or covetable!), high-quality item that brings joy to your contacts! Where possible, consider minimalist and eco-friendly packaging.
3. Topicality
Mailers can either be led by brand news – a new product launch (NPD) is ideal – or by external events such as an awareness campaign or a seasonal focus. Getting NPD into “the hands” of the right contacts is a fantastic way to start organic sampling and authentic reviews. However, competition is stiff and journalists will be inundated with beautifully packaged & super stylish
mailers all year round. So, it’s worth considering any additional news angles for “stand out” and ensuring that the attention to detail on the packaging is “on point” and unique to your brand.
Creating mailers to coincide with the key UK seasonal calendar can be rich in colour and playful in terms of the message, design and gifting options. For example, ahead of the 2026 Summer Holidays, Trinity sent out samples of Revive Active’s single sachet super supplements in this season’s “must-have” Space NK mini-travel pouch to help journalists keep the product to hand “on the go” to optimise their wellness on a flight, at the festival and by the pool.
Awareness days and campaigns can also provide a strong editorial “hook” and obvious point of reference for health and wellbeing journalists – over the years we’ve created mailers around events like World Menopause Day, the London Marathon and the Autumnal “clock change”.
And, finally, don’t get so carried away with the creative process that you forget to include all the key product info (e.g. ingredients, RRP, stockists, spokespeople / experts) and press contact details – to ensure that journalist and influencers can share accurately across platforms and get in touch re. any questions. So, place a well-designed card (with space for a personal, hand-written message and a QR code to the brand website and access to high-res images) on top of the mailer & let the magic unfold!
